This is the last article of our Natural Weight Loss Program series.
Ispaghula Husk (Plantago ovata Forssk), also known as bulk-forming laxative or Fybogel, is one of the best fiber diets found naturally and can be used for the treatment of high cholesterol, hyperlipidemia, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic constipation. It is derived from dried ripe seeds of plantago ovata Forssk. It is available in the form of effervescent granules or powder that can be mixed with water or milk if taken orally. Alternatively, it can be applied externally for the treatment of yeast and skin infections.
Ispaghula Husk swells in the gastro-intestinal tract and increases the volume of the faeces. As a result, the muscles in the gut push the faeces out more easily and quickly. Another name for Ispaghula Husk is psyllium and is known to be good for Crohn’s disease, colon cancer, and hemorrhoids. Laxatives are generally considered to be addictive and over time make the colon forget its function. As a result, discontinuing the use of such a laxative causes constipation. However, Ispaghula Husk is not addictive and can be used daily without worrying about the aftereffects. Another difference is that other laxatives are not helpful in weight management but Ispaghula Husk is. This herbal medicine is particularly useful for those who cannot put up with bran or fibrous diet.
It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids when taking Ispaghula Husk for the treatment of constipation. In fact, any fiber-rich food would do the trick if adequate water is consumed with it. Although it has no adverse health effects, it is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women and those who find it difficult to swallow. Moreover, people suffering from intestinal obstruction (blockage of the gut) and colonic atony should not take it without consulting their doctor first. It is not advisable to increase the dose of Ispaghula Husk without a physician’s permission and it should not be taken just before bedtime. It is not meant to replace fiber-rich foods; instead it just acts as a natural laxative and its main function is to cure stomach-related ailments and lower bad cholesterol levels. Some side effects of Ispaghula Husk include abdominal discomfort, flatulence, bowel obstruction, and bloating. It should never be taken in dry form as it may cause oesophageal obstruction.
Ispaghula Husk and Weight Loss
Like other fibrous foods, Ispaghula Husk can be taken to maintain or lose weight. Since the husks tend to swell when they are mixed with water they create a feeling of fullness in the stomach, thereby suppressing appetite. The husks contain soluble and insoluble fiber in a 70/30 ratio. Since it contains more soluble fiber, it effectively improves glucose tolerance in people with diabetes. Fiber helps in losing weight by increasing fecal excretion, slowing down the absorption of glucose, decreasing secretion of insulin, and slowing down the process of gastric emptying. By effectively curing chronic constipation, a major obstacle in controlling weight, it facilitates the process of burning fat. It is recommended to add fiber to your diet gradually and drink plenty of water in order to get the maximum benefits. Remember Ispaghula Husk alone is not used as a weight loss supplement; it just complements your diet plan especially if you are not consuming enough fiber on a daily basis. This natural laxative will not only improve your digestive profile and cure constipation, a common problem these days, but also aid in eliminating fat from your body. Some old fecal matter trapped inside your colon also contributes to an increase in weight. This impacted or accumulated waste can be effectively removed by using Ispaghula Husk on a regular basis. It therefore acts as a detoxifying agent and improves colon functioning. The recommended dose of Ispaghula Husk is 10 or more grams each day taken in three amounts throughout the day. The easy way to incorporate this natural laxative and weight loss aide into your diet is to mix 2 to 3 teaspoons of the husks to water and drink it with breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
A controlled dose of Ispaghula Husk with fiber-rich healthy and balanced diet such as the one explained in this program along with regular fat burning exercise can definitely help you shed those extra pounds in a short span of time. Just follow the tips carefully and adopt a healthy and active lifestyle to prevent and cure obesity and other fitness complications.
